The USTRC’s Heart of Texas Championships kicked into gear January 15-17, 2010. The annual event produced by the USTRC staff welcomed more than 1030 team ropers and their families to town to make up more than 2215 teams. The event takes place at the state of the art Heart of Texas Coliseum and is an event that team ropers don’t want to miss. This year the setup was extremely roper friendly and the cattle were exceptional. The roping just set the stage for a new era of USTRC events.

Wallace Townsend of Davidson, Oklahoma was the big winner of the event. He and his partners took home over $14,000, a pair of trophy Gist buckles and two tooled trophy saddle pads.

“This roping in Waco was a great roping and the cattle were really good,” said 60 year old Townsend. “It was really roper friendly and I loved the score and the setup. In fact, everyone in our crew really liked it and we had a great time.”

Townsend began by winning second and fifth in the main average of the #12 Division. He and partner Monty Jacob secured second place with a time of 33.34 seconds and earned an awesome paycheck worth $5472, trophy Gist buckles and a USTRC Shoot Out worth $6000 in USTRC Flex Earnings. Townsend and Lloyd South claimed fifth place in the main average and took home a great paycheck worth $1592 and a USTRC Regional Shoot Out worth $2000 in USTRC Flex Earnings.

“Monty and I have roped quite a bit over the years and it was good to win with him,” said Townsend. “Lloyd and I are pretty good friends and rope a whole lot together. He is a great friend and a great partner.”

Townsend added to his winnings in the #12 Gold Plus Division where he teamed up with Heathe Heller to earn the fast time of the roping. The pair caught their steer in 6.03 seconds to earn the paycheck.

“Heathe and I rope together at the jackpots and ropings around,” said Townsend. “We usually win pretty good together too.”

In the #9 Division Townsend teamed up with Walter Mainka and caught four steers in 37.51 seconds. The consistency landed them third place in the main average. They pocketed $6302, trophy tooled saddle pads and a USTRC National Finals Shoot Out worth $6000 in USTRC Flex Earnings.

“Walter and I had never roped together. We met through our grandkids junior rodeoing and decided to rope,” added Townsend. “It worked out really well and we got lucky. I don’t heel a lot and usually don’t catch. He was just lucky I caught four.”

The Heart of Texas Championships was a sweet USTRC event as ropers from 19 different states and Canada enjoyed the team roping action. The unique roper friendly atmosphere had everyone smiling when they left and eager for the next event.
